Annual Report 2008-9
This has been another quiet year for the trust, with the Whole Person Clinic at the Barkantine Practice now ceased. Whilst there is no clinical expression of the Trust’s whole-person approach now functioning, the lessons learned are being put into practice in a variety of ways as described below.
Web Sites
Our new web site is www.wphtrust.com . We are continuing to gradually develop it’s usefulness as a resource for people interested in whole-person health care.
Hanbury Booklets
We have been using the Hanbury series of booklets as a way of publishing longer articles or essays which build towards an understanding of whole-person health. A list of booklets published, is available from the Trust office. At present we have no plans to publish any more titles, mainly because Dr Sheldon is now involved in a venture with WholeCare in producing books on a regular basis in a similar area of interest.
Training programmes
Dr Sheldon continues to be involved in a number of teaching and training sessions both in the UK and abroad. These have mainly been to medical audiences, informing them of the importance of a whole-person approach, and then discussing possible ways in which medical practice may be altered to provide a more whole-person method of health care delivery.
Some on-going consultancy work has been undertaken, so far mainly with GPs, to help them seek for ways in which whole-person principles may be applied in practice.
Spiritual Care Advisors
In conjunction with a number of General Practices in Birmingham, Dr Sheldon has been cooperating with the local Mental Health team to audit and develop the use of SCAs (Spiritual Care Advisors) into Primary Care. Up to now these advisors have been called Chaplains, but we are now developing a job description and training programme to fully integrate these advisors into the NHS team.
WholeCare
This new organization has been developed by Dr Sheldon and others interested in the field of wholeness and healing. The main co-workers are Dr Michael Harper, Dr Geoffrey Clarke, Dr Alison Gray and Revd Dr Russ Parker. The organization intends working as an umbrella organisation for healing centers and Christian whole-person projects.
We have received further gifts during this last year, mainly dedicated to the work of WholeCare.. The Whole Person Health Trust has held these designated funds to be spent by WholeCare on projects relating to the advancement of whole person care. Conferences have been held, and research fellows already appointed to explore in depth some aspects of the whole person approach in health care. Further details available from their web site at www.wholecare.org.
EMCPA
The annual meeting of the European Movement for Christian Psychology and Anthropology (EMCPA) was held this year in Warsaw, Poland, and Dr Sheldon was one of the main contributors. We also designed and maintain a web site on behalf of the organisation which can be found at www.emcpa.eu
Future developments
It is our intention to spend the coming year concentrating of developing and disseminating resources for health care professionals, through books and pamphlets, our web sites and conferences and training seminars. We also intend encouraging other professionals who are seeking to develop a whole person approach to health.
Philippa Downs has continued to provide administrative backup for the Trust, although as the year ended she has moved on to a new career.
